Active Membership
Active membership in the Sorptive Minerals Institute (SMI)
is open to any firm or corporation that produces and/or sells
Sorptive minerals, which are defined to include a variety
of clays, specifically attapulgite, bentonite, diatomite and
montmorillonite. In addition, the firm or corporation must
have been actively engaged in processing and/or selling a
significant quantity of sorptive minerals into the following
markets for at least one and one half years.
- Agricultural Absorbents
- Industrial Absorbents
- Pet Absorbents
- Soil Amendments/Mulches
Application for membership in the Sorptive Minerals Institute
must be made in writing. The applicant must complete the SMI
Membership Application and submit it to the Executive Director.
The SMI Board of Directors will consider the application at
its next regularly scheduled meeting. The applicant will be
notified of the Board of Directors’ decision within
15 days of the Board meeting.
Associate Membership
Associate Membership in the Sorptive Minerals Institute
is open to any firm or corporation who is a manufacturer of
supplies or a supplier of services directly related to the
sorptive minerals industry. Associate Members may not vote
or serve as officers of the corporation or as members of the
corporation’s Board of Directors. Associate Members
may attend meetings of the Board of Directors at the invitation
of the Board.
Application for Associate Membership in the Sorptive Minerals
Institute must be made in writing. The applicant must complete
the SMI Associate Membership Application and submit it to
the Executive Director. The SMI Board of Directors will consider
the application at its next regularly scheduled meeting. The
applicant will be notified of the Board of Directors’
decision within 15 days of the Board meeting.
Affiliate Members
Affiliate Membership in the Sorptive Minerals Institute
is open to any firm or corporation engaged in the production
and/or distribution of industrial minerals, other than absorbent
clay minerals used in the applications specified for active
membership. Affiliate Members may not vote or serve as officers
of the corporation or as members of the corporation’s
Board of Directors. Affiliate Members may attend meetings
of the Board of Directors, attend meetings and participate
in the activities of the SMI Technical Committee and, attend
meetings and participate in the activities of any other committees
created by the corporation.
Application for Affiliate Membership in the Sorptive Minerals
Institute must be made in writing. The applicant must complete
the SMI Affiliate Membership Application and submit it to
the Executive Director. The SMI Board of Directors will consider
the application at its next regularly scheduled meeting. The
applicant will be notified of the Board of Directors’
decision within 15 days of the Board meeting.
